What Are Archetypes?

Archetypes are life patterns that help describe, define and shape who we are as individuals and how we interact with everyday circumstances and events. They are common to all people, cultures, communities and nations and determine how we engage with others.

Every archetype represents something physical in our lives – for example, if we have the writer archetype, we produce articles, scripts, books or websites – but more importantly it reflects something symbolic and intrinsic about ourselves.

Everyone is born with 12 archetypes – eight of their own that make up a team of influences and behaviors that drives a person’s life.  The remaining four are comprised of Universal archetypes that all people possess at the time of birth – the Child, Prostitute, Saboteur and Victim. These archetypes drive our deepest internal thoughts and beliefs about ourselves. Learning the nuances of the Universals opens a door of personal understanding that will change your life. Adding your team of eight will expand your understanding of family, work relationships or even life purpose.

Victim

  • Student - An archetype that seeks learning knowledge, such as pursuing several degrees although they’re not needed; signs up frequently for classes, but doesn’t take the time to integrate and use what is learned.

  • Detective – The drive to solve mystery through clues, to find in-depth answers about people, crimes, unexplained events; lacks the foresight when to stop.

  • Artist – Desire to create visual beauty through painting, photography, drawing, various hand created media for self-expression; challenge is to find one’s own self and value through the process.

  • Victim – A pervasive belief that one is helpless, powerless and has no control over life or situations; within that belief, action is rarely taken to alleviate the situation.
